The Music of Hamburg – Telemann, Matheson, Handel...
At the start of the 18th century, Hamburg was a thriving cosmopolitan city and a bourgeois cultural hotspot. At times it boasted two opera houses, and attracted leading ambitious young musicians.
Three who lived and worked there, whose presence overlapped, were Georg Philipp Telemann, Johann Mattheson, and Georg Frederick Handel.
Colin will describe the ways these influential figures interacted. We have vivid accounts of some of their successes, failures, and near-disasters.
All three have left us music for keyboard, in very contrasting styles, and examples from all of them will be played.
