Sligo Baroque Orchestra with around a dozen extremely talented students will perform a concert on Saturday 23rd March that features a symphony by an extremely talented king from the 18th Century. Frederick the Great of Prussia was in many respects a rather extraordinary monarch – his great love of music poetry and philosophy was not shared by many royalty, and his almost daily performances as solo flautist with his court orchestra, and his composition of numbers of symphonies, concertos and sonatas must create some respect from even an ardent republican. Two young Sligo flautists, Charlotte Kinsella and David Watters will play the solo parts in his D major symphony which is part of the programme. Maynooth students Natalie Flynn (violin) and Moya Gorman (cello) are the soloists in a Vivaldi double concerto, and Cillian Houston, also now in Maynooth will perform in movements from Telemann’s much loved viola concerto. Ciara Fagan from Donegal will take the solo part in Sammartini’s recorder concerto, Ferdia Durkin will sing an aria from Haydn’s creation and playing solo violin in the first movement of Bach concerto in E is Katie Reape. And that’s not mentioning the students who will be playing in an enlarged Sligo Baroque Orchestra with leader Nicola Cleary for this special concert. Saturday March 23rd at 8 pm in the newly refurbished hall of the Presbyterian Church (on the corner of Charles Street and Chapel Street, behind the Hawks Well Theatre. Tickets just €8 and children and students free.
