12noon Introduction to Baroque Music

An informal and interactive opportunity to learn about baroque music with members of Sligo Baroque Orchestra, to hold and play the instruments, and to ask questions.

All festival-goers and friends are warmly invited to the launch of the 24th Sligo Festival of Baroque Music, with music and refreshments, prior to the opening concert.

8pm Collegium Marianum Heavenly Creatures

The renowned ensemble from Prague, under Jana Semerádová, play J S Bach’s Suite No.2 BWV 1067, his cousin Johann Bernhard Bach’s Ouverture No.3 and arias from J S Bach’s cantatas with soprano Kristýna Vylíčilová.

11am Masterclass

Collegium Marianum players will offer masterclasses in flute (Jana Semerádová), baroque violin (Lenka Torgersen) and baroque cello (Hana Fleková).

1pm RIAM Ensemble

Soloists of RIAM, Dublin, will perform sonatas and arias by composers including Geminiani, Montalbano and Giordani, with a Telemann cantata. Gabriele Dikcuite, cello and Matthew Breen, harpsichord.

8pm Collegium Marianum Stravaganza

From cuckoos and nightingales to contemplative partitas and stately chaconnes: this concert presents rare 17th century masterpieces of virtuosity, innovation and style, for violin, cello, theorbo and harpsichord.

10pm Colin Booth, harpsichord

Appropriate to the hour, Colin plays dark, expressive pieces from 17th century France, by Louis Couperin, d’Anglebert and others.

Sligo Baroque Orchestra, led by Nicola Cleary, will play rarely heard works including Biber’s Battalia, Chedeville’s light-hearted homage to Vivaldi’s Spring (with uilleann pipes!), and two pieces by Zelenka.

6pm Collegium Marianum with Miriam Kaczor, flute Boemo Furioso

In the closing concert, Irish flute virtuoso Miriam joins Jana Semerádová and our guests form Prague in a programme ranging from Vivaldi’s concerto for two flutes to works by his contemporaries - Reichenauer and Brentner in Bohemia, Quantz and Orschler in Germany - who were all masters of the instrument.

Colin Booth, harpsichord 

The late concert on Saturday at 10pm is a favourite with lovers of baroque music at the Sligo Baroque Festival. 

The music and the mood are nocturnal, gentle and reflective. 

Appropriate to the hour, Colin Booth, the well-known English harpsichord player, maker and scholar, will play dark, expressive pieces from 17th century France, by Louis Couperin, d'Anglebert and others.

The mysteries of the playlist will be revealed on the night.
